If you or someone you know needs medical cannabis (marijuana) we are here to help. Of course we cannot sell or otherwise distribute cannabis, but we are working with our legislators in Topeka, trying to persuade them to change Kansas cannabis law.

The key to getting the law changed is education: People need to learn the truth about medical cannabis. There is a lot of damage to undo after decades of government misinformation and outright lies about cannabis, including its medical use.

That is why this network was created (August, 2009). We want to help patients and those who care for them to become effective advocates for themselves and work toward changing the law. It is not a crime to talk or write about cannabis. (If it were I'd have been locked up and the key thrown away long ago.)

First, we must educate the general public. Anyone can do this by talking and writing locally. Talk about medical cannabis with the people with whom you regularly interact. Write letters to editors. Start small; write to your community newsletters and small town papers about your own or your loved one's need for medical cannabis. Usually you can request that your name be withheld if you prefer to remain anonymous.

It is more difficult to speak anonymously, but it can be done and this is an extremely effective way to educate voters. Talk to small groups in your community about medical cannabis and why you or your loved one needs it.

Civic clubs, such as Rotaries and Lions and church, senior and other community groups often need speakers for their regular meetings. Here is a marvelous opportunity to enlighten people and then, at the end of your short talk, if they seem convinced ask them to contact their representatives in Topeka about changing the law. Simple, inexpensive and effective education!

If you think you might want to talk to people about your needs as a patient or caregiver, please contact me, cheryl riley, at medcankan@wheatstate.com. As a prospective patient myself, I will be happy to help you get your story heard and acted upon.

Thank you and best wishes. Here's hoping this is the last year we have to do this!
