Getting to Know Your Lawmakers
19 Dec 2012: Many people are surprised to learn how accessible their representatives in Topeka actually are. The first step in communicating with them is to become acquainted via telephone, letter or email.

Even better, set up an appointment to visit them in person and leave a more lasting impression. When you have occasion to call or write to them later you want them to recognize you right away.

Initiate contact with your lawmakers in advance of advocating any particular bill or legislation. ALWAYS be respectful of them regardless of your emotions; be someone THEY will respect in return. Once you establish a relationship with your representatives be sure to stay in touch with them!

Contact your Kansas legislators TODAY!

Feds Again Say "No" to Rescheduling
01/22/12, 2:00pm:
Once again, the will of the majority has been disregarded by the federal government because there is too much industry built upon prohibition. However, they have put together a most
interesting document Please call or visit ALL of your federal lawmakers to be sure they are aware of this report, especially the conclusion on pg 17!

Speed Bump!

Dear Friends,
Recently a really stupid thing* happened and as a result I was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession in Butler County. I am seeing this as a golden opportunity to further raise awareness about medical cannabis here in the heart of Red America.

I plan to plead not guilty and ask for a trial by jury. I have applied for a court-appointed attorney but do not expect to qualify for one unless only my own income is considered.

Therefore, I have set up a request on Fundrazr.com asking for donations toward legal expenses and fines. I'm sure that pleading guilty would end up costing me far less than fighting for my rights, but I refuse to be intimidated! The worst that could happen is that I could spend up to a year in Butler County jail, but I am willing to take that risk.

Also, at my sentencing (and other court appearances) I would like to fill the courtroom with patients and other supporters. Next court date: June 17, 8am, Butler County Courts, 301 W Pine, courtroom D or E, El Dorado. (Coincidently, this is the 40th anniversary of Nixon's declaration of the "war on drugs.")

Please click here to donate to my legal defense and court costs fund. Every cent counts, and I cannot thank you enough for your unwavering support. With love and blessings to all.

*When our daughter, who lives with us, called the sheriff to report minor vandalism to our property we ended up with four officers here to investigate. They did not seem concerned with the vandalism, but claimed to smell marijuana. I thought this was unlikely since no one here had used any yet that day and we try to keep our home deodorized. Nevertheless, to get rid of them I eventually owned up to using cannabis medicinally and was asked to forfeit the two joints (marijuana cigarettes) that I admitted to having.

I gave them the evidence and they did leave--without taking a report on the vandalism. About six weeks later I was served a summons to appear in court on the possession charge. I took my cane with me and went to court resembling a matronly pillar of the community. My next appearance in Butler County District Court, courtroom D or E is 8am, June 17. Visitors are encouraged to attend.

Dear Supporters:
Thank you beyond measure for all the help and encourgement you have given us over these past 3+ years as we have worked to bring safe, legal access to medical cannabis to Kansas patients. It is thrilling to see change coming at a faster pace every day.

That change includes major progress and growth within our group. We believe that the next generation will have few problems completing our project, and it is okay for some of us to retire and leave the mission in their quite capable hands.

We have created a nonprofit organization [Kansas for Change, Inc. a 501 (c)(4)] to pursue sensible cannabis laws for Kansas.

The Kansas Medical Cannabis Network is now a part of Kansas for Change, Inc. and we are developing a new group, KansasHempYes, to focus on the relegalization of hemp for industrial use.

This website will be allowed to expire naturally later this year, after which time (as well as now) we may be found at Kansas for Change, Inc.

Education 101
There is a marvelous, nearly free opportunity to enlighten Kansas voters. It is simple, inexpensive and effective:

Civic clubs, such as Rotaries and Lions and church, senior and other community groups often need speakers for their regular meetings. We can provide those speakers: Choose from patients, caregivers and loved ones or even healthcare professionals.

Invite one of them to talk to your group about the medical cannabis/marijuana issue. People need to learn the truth and stop being afraid of medical cannabis; this is an incredibly effective way to increase awareness among Kansas voters. Book a speaker today!

Updated Patients' Pleas and Testimonials
3/2/13: It has been much too long since we updated patients' stories, so we have added some new ones:

From Mike Morton, Udall:
"On behalf of the thousands of Kansans suffering needlessly from lack of access to Medical Marijuana I would like to thank the Courier for finally admitting in print what has been known for centuries, Marijuana works for a wide assortment of ailments, but its use for cancer treatment, not just relief from the complications of Chemo therapy, but actually shrinking tumors, is now being widely tested.

Many people seem to think that they "know all about" Marijuana and they make ignorant comments like those included in the Courier Editorial and the letter from a reader.

The Feds VS States' Rights

Marijuana is not physically addictive in any way. In some people there can be a psychological dependence more akin to "addiction" to sex, food and shopping which many in our society seem quite proud to engage in. We do not prohibit these activities because some people cannot control themselves.

One cannot overdose from Marijuana, yet every year hundreds of college students die from alcohol poisoning. Many enlightened parents have come to the realization that alcohol and tobacco are the real gateway drugs and far more addictive and dangerous. Many parents would prefer their college kids use Marijuana but they risk losing all student loans because of our draconian drug laws. (continue)

Who Supports Safe, Legal Access to Medical Marijuana for Seriously Ill Kansans?

Some are paying attention...
2/11/13: This is a clip from one of Kansas Senator Forrest Knox's newsletters:

"I am hearing support for medical marijuana from my constituents. SB 9 would make it legal in Kansas. Other states have recently made this move and there is obviously an organized effort to move it forward in Kansas. I need to hear from you."

NOTE: It has come to our attention that telephone and personal visits to your legislators are MUCH more effective than written messages because it is so easy for them to dismiss our email messages as spam without looking at them. We would hope that their assistants would at least open and read snail messages, but those are easily tossed away as well. So please call and ask to speak with your legislators as this means of communication is much more difficult to ignore or just throw away.

Please also contact these Kansas lawmakers in support of HB2198. It has never been more urgent that we demonstrate widespread voter support for medical cannabis in Kansas--especially now that it looks like the issue might come down to states rights. Let's all hope Kansas isn't the last state to repeal prohibition again!

Also please contact and THANK the following legislators who have assisted and encouraged us this session: Representatives Gail Finney, Vern Swanson and Tom Sloan for HB2198, and Senator David Haley for introducing SB9 in the Kansas Senate.

MarijuanaDoctors.com
A service for patients searching for medical cannabis treatment in legal medical cannabis states. The site provides patients with visibility and transparency in selecting a doctor and setting an appointment for a medical marijuana evaluation.
(This link has been provided for a glimpse at what we hope will be available to Kansas patients in the less far future than ever before.) n light of recent events, it has never been more crucial that we target our federal representatives and insist that cannabis be rescheduled.
